Customer Research - Primary vs Secondary

Methods of research

Primary Research - is the collection of information first-hand for a specific purpose.

  •  Researchers often go out to collect this type of research therefore it is frequently called 'Field Research'

Secondary Research - is the use of information that has already been collected for a different purpose

  •   Secondary is found through the process of examining published documents (i.e. 'Desk Research')
  • Secondary research data can take many forms. The type of data is commonly chosen for a their particular use/purpose. Example of sources include - government publications, newspapers, company records, magazines, competitors, market research organizations, loyalty cards, the internet.
